"Local Focus - Wider Vision: Marine Renewables Studies at Queen's University Belfast Marine Laboratory"
Speaker: Dr Graham Savidge - Queens University Belfast
Dr Graham Savidge is Reader in Marine Biology at Queen's University Belfast and is based at the University Marine Laboratory at Portaferry. Queen's University Belfast has major interest in marine renewables, ranging from wave energy through the environmental consequences of energy extraction to economic uses of seaweed.
Graham's talk will describe ecological work carried out at the University Marine Laboratory located at the entrance to Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland, an area where the traditional fishing industry has declined. One of the major projects has been the assessment of the potential environmental consequences of the deployment of the SeaGen tidal turbine in the fast- flowing waters of the Strangford Narrows, especially in relation to the local common seal, porpoise and seabird populations and also benthic communities. A strong focus has also been given to background investigations into the use of macroalgae as a renewable resource and also into changes in the population structure and dynamics resulting from alterations in the ambient wave environment.
