10 Things to consider before approving another offshore wind farm: A case study for Highland, Scotland

A new open-access paper by Dr Lonneke Goddijn-Murphy, Associate at the Environmental Research Institute (ERI), has been published in the journal Ocean & Coastal Management (Elsevier).

Titled “Ten Overlooked and Underestimated Impacts of Offshore Wind Farms”, the study examines a range of environmental and social effects that may receive less attention in current offshore wind planning and assessment processes. It identifies knowledge gaps in the evaluation of offshore wind developments and reflects on the pace of large-scale deployment in relation to available scientific understanding.

The paper discusses issues extending from ecosystem interactions to human dimensions, suggesting that cumulative impacts across multiple developments merit further consideration as offshore wind capacity expands.

The publication forms part of an ongoing discussion about how best to balance renewable energy growth with responsible marine management.
