ERI PhD Researcher Featured by Arctic Connections

PhD researcher Lucy Mortlock from the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) has been featured in a recent article published by the Scottish Arctic Network (ScAN), highlighting her research on Arctic-breeding sea ducks and the challenges of conducting fieldwork in some of the world's most remote environments.

The article, "Duck Spotting in the Snow", explores Lucy's research journey and her work investigating the ecology and conservation of sea duck species in northern and Arctic regions. Through a combination of field observations, tracking technologies and ecological analysis, her research aims to improve understanding of how these birds use marine environments and how they may respond to environmental change.

Based at ERI in Thurso, Lucy's PhD research contributes to a growing body of work focused on understanding the pressures facing Arctic and sub-Arctic wildlife. The feature also provides an insight into the realities of conducting research in remote northern locations, from challenging weather conditions to the logistical complexities of studying highly mobile marine species.
