University of the Highlands and Islands Joins the Planetary Health Alliance
The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) has been welcomed as a new member of the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA), joining a global network of organisations committed to understanding and addressing the impacts of environmental change on human health and wellbeing.
The Planetary Health Alliance is an international consortium of more than 550 universities, research institutes, non-governmental organisations and government bodies from over 80 countries. The Alliance supports the development of Planetary Health as a field of research, education and practice, recognising the close links between the health of people, animals and ecosystems.
The application was coordinated through UHI's One Health Steering Group, which is co-chaired by Professor Stuart Gibb and Alistair Kean. The membership reflects UHI's growing commitment to interdisciplinary approaches that address complex environmental and societal challenges.
Researchers at the Environmental Research Institute (ERI) have long contributed to areas closely aligned with Planetary Health, including climate change, environmental pollution, biodiversity conservation, renewable energy, marine ecosystems and sustainable development. The new membership provides additional opportunities to connect this work with a global community of researchers and practitioners working at the interface of environmental and human health.
Membership of the Alliance will provide opportunities for UHI researchers to engage with international networks, develop new collaborations and contribute to global efforts addressing the interconnected challenges of environmental change, ecosystem health and human wellbeing. The new membership also strengthens the University's commitment to the principles of One Health and sustainability.
